Little S Meets His Match

I mean teacher! Really, I mean teacher.

I took S earlier this week for his "meet the teacher" afternoon at the nursery that he will be attending in the fall.

Before I tell you how it went, I have to give you a little background information about S's ideas of school.

The first thing you have to understand is that big brother G is "it" in S's eyes. G's name is the first word he says every morning, followed by at least 100 repetitions of G's name throughout the day, and it is the last word he says before he falls asleep each night. I'm not joking!

The toughest part of S's day is saying goodbye to his big brother each morning as we drop him off for school. Oh, the drama . . the scene that unfolds each morning in front of the little blue school doors is heart wrenching. It could very well be mistaken for a sequel to Steal Magnolias, only without the megastar cast and my little boys as the main characters.

On the other hand, the highlight of S's day is when he hears me say, "It's time to go get G at school." With those few words, S moves like lightning to get out the door, into the stroller and practically buckles himself in, all the while saying, "come on, baby, come on, baby" (baby is what he calls B). This is the only time my feisty little 2 year old cooperates and willingly gets into the stroller. Once B is buckled and we are off, S calls at the top of his lungs all the way to school, "DIL, we're umin et you!" which translates to "G, we're coming to get you!"

Now, we have not needed to really talk the whole school thing up very much because S would gladly attend school with G each and every day if only given the invitation. I've taken him up into G's classroom a couple of times and he falls right in with the other boys and girls, doing exactly as they do.

So Monday afternoon I informed S that we were going to his school to meet his teacher. Again, he could not climb into the stroller fast enough, so we were off. We took the 15 minute stroll to his school, all the while S was calling out, "DIL, we're umin et you!"

We arrived and S did not budge. He was looking around in utter bewilderment for G, for G's class, and for G's teacher. I could tell he was on the verge of a major 2 year old tantrum. More drama!

I finally coaxed him out of the stroller, and he was on his way. Isn't that the great thing about 2 year olds? In one instant their little world can be collapsing, but after a good distraction, the next moment is bliss!

We made our way into the sweet little nursery school and that was the last I saw of S. He waltzed through the door, met the head of the school and then his teacher, and then he proceeded to walk through as if he owned the place. He made his way to each little play area and gave it all a try without ever looking back. Without looking back for ME!

His teachers were watching S too, and oh, so politely commented about how self-assured he was, that he was a very confident little boy, and that he did not seem to have any separation issues.

That's our boy!

I snapped some photos of S in action at his school:

Even though S will not be at school with his beloved G, I think he is going to be just fine!
